He was a prodigy who started playing piano at the age of 3. Jarrett revealed he had two strokes in 2018 and now he’s partially paralyzed and unable to perform. It is unlikely he will ever perform in public again.
Prospect of a Keith Jarrett who no longer considers himself a pianist is dumbfounding: “When I hear two-handed piano music, it’s very frustrating, in a physical way. If I even hear Schubert, or something played softly, that’s enough for me. Because I know that I couldn’t do that. And I’m not expected to recover that. The most I’m expected to recover in my left hand is possibly the ability to hold a cup in it.”
Thank you, Keith, for bringing your genius, your fun spirit and yes, even your idiosyncrasies to all of us.
