The zoo is a funhouse mirror that reflects and refracts the peculiarities of being human. The film by Dutch director Bert Haanstra shows the similarities, contrasts and parallels between animals and humans. He constantly has us reassessing who’s watching whom. With its comical juxtapositions and delightful absurdity, the whole thing is playful, funny and gleefully anthropomorphic.
It’s a good thing that the Zoos have changed, as far as the welfare of the animals is concerned, although it could be better.
